Wesley Community Center was established in 1966. It began in the former
Epworth Methodist Church building located at 2301 West Third Street (comer of
West Third and Kilmer). The Epworth congregation had merged with the St. Mark's
Church, thus giving the trusteeship of the facility to the United Methodist
Mission Society.
During the early and mid-sixties the community surrounding the
church was experiencing many changes. The results were various areas of unmet
needs and lack of a stabilizing source to serve as a conciliatory agent. Thus
the United Methodist Mission Society established Wesley Community Center to
respond to the community and its needs.

Wesley Community Center ministered from the 2301 West Third Street address
until November 1972, when it was destroyed by fire. From 1972 unti11976, it
operated in storefront facilities between the 2400-2900 blocks of West Third
and West Second Streets. During these four years the Wesley Ministry was thoroughly
evaluated and a long range plan was developed for its future service.
